Mr Jean-Luc Eiselé PhD

Jean-Luc Eiselé is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Heart Federation (WHF), a global heart health authority based in Geneva, Switzerland. He has worked in the field of medical association management for almost 20 years. Mr. Eiselé was trained as a biochemist at the Biozentrum in Basel and the Pasteur Institute in Paris.
In 1999, he joined the European Respiratory Society as Scientific Affairs Manager, and in 2007 became Executive Director. In 2011, Jean-Luc Eiselé was appointed Executive Director of the FDI World Dental Federation, where he developed advocacy work at the global level with the World Health Organization and successfully launched World Oral Health Day. Since his appointment as CEO of WHF in 2017, Jean-Luc Eiselé has strengthened the business model of the Federation and enhanced membership engagement. The WHF is an umbrella organization that represents the global cardiovascular community by uniting patient, medical, and scientific groups. The organization influences policies and shares knowledge to promote cardiovascular health for everyone. It connects the cardiovascular community, translates science into policy, and promotes the exchange of information and knowledge to achieve heart health for everyone.

Professor Steve Humphries PhD

Steve Humphries is a world-renowned expert in cardiovascular genetics, a field in which he has worked for over 40 years. He worked at University College London from 1991, where he was the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics, retiring in September 2015 and is the BHF UCL Emeritus Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics.
Professor Humphries has an h index of >110 and has published over 770 papers and more than 230 review articles and has supervised 39 PhD and 8 MD thesis students. He directed a major research programme to develop and implement molecular strategies to study the causes and clinical and psychological consequences of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH). He was the Lead Advisor to the UK NICE guidelines on FH published in 2008, and updated in 2017, and has published on the health economics of cascade testing and Universal Screening for FH. He serves on the Cholesterol and FH Expert Advisory Group is the the Director of the UK FH Paediatric Register and the Simon Broome FH Register. He is actively involved with teaching, ethics, and public awareness aspects of the implementation of genetic testing for FH. |

Professor Kornelia Kotseva holds a position as Consultant Cardiologist at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, UK, and an appointment at the National Institute for Prevention and Cardiovascular Health, National University of Galway, Ireland. Prior to this she had academic appointments at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London, UK and at the Department of Public Health, Ghent University, Belgium.
She was a Chair of the Steering Committee of the ESC EUROASPIRE IV and V surveys, aiming to describe the risk factor management in patients with coronary disease and in people at high cardiovascular risk in Europe. Furthermore, she was a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of several other European and UK studies: EUROASPIRE III Health Economics, ASPIRE-2-PREVENT, ASPIRE-3-PREVENT, EUROACTION, EUROACTION PLUS, the productivity losses and indirect costs after cardiovascular events in Europe, the Heart Quality of Life (HeartQoL) and other studies. She was an expert panel member of the WHF Roadmap programme of the cardiovascular disease prevention among people with diabetes, the Euro Heart Index and the EU funded EConDA project on cost-effectiveness for chronic diseases. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the INTERASPIRE survey in six WHO regions and the forthcoming ESC EUROASPIRE VI survey.
Her main research and clinical interest is the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. |

Kazem Rahimi is a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Population Health, at the University of Oxford and a consultant cardiologist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. His research interests include hypertension, heart failure, multimorbidity and cardiovascular risk management, using a variety of methodologies such as individual-patient meta-analysis, large-scale decentralised clinical trials, and digital health technologies.
Kazem leads the Deep Medicine programme at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health with a major interest in application of machine learning approaches to electronic health records. He also leads the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration (BPLTTC), which is an international collaboration of all the major trials of blood pressure-lowering drugs. He is the Director of the Martin School programme on Informal Cities. |

Dr Alan Thomas Remaley MD, PhD

Dr. Remaley received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981. He received in 1987 a M.D. and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed in 1990 a residency in Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and became board certified in Clinical Pathology in 1992. He joined the National Institutes of Health in 1990, as a medical staff fellow, and did a postdoctoral fellowship on lipoprotein metabolism at the Molecular Disease Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He became in 1995 a senior staff member of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, where he directs the Immunoassay and HPLC/Mass Spectrometry laboratories. As of 2005, he became the section chief of the Lipoprotein Metabolism Laboratory at NHLBI. He is the author of over 500 publications, mostly in the fields of lipoprotein metabolism and clinical pathology. |

Simon qualified as a dietitian in 2011 and has worked in Barnsley, Weston Super Mare, Cardiff and Bristol since. Previously Simon specialized in Gastroenterology and Neurology until 2019. Since 2020 Simon has specialized in Inherited Metabolic Disorders and has not looked back. Simon is excited to be at HEART UK this year! |

Gerald Watts trained at Imperial and King’s College, London University. He practices cardiometabolic and general medicine as a senior consultant physician and chairs the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Australasia Network.
He leads the Cardiometabolic Service in the Departments of Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Royal Perth Hospital and is Winthrop Professor of Cardiometabolic Medicine in the University of Western Australia. Research interests include fundamental and applied aspects of lipid disorders and cardiovascular prevention, improving healthcare delivery for patients with high-risk dyslipidaemias, and implementation science and practice.
He has supervised several Masters, MD and PhD students and post-doctoral research fellows. He holds several research grants, with multiple international collaborations. Professor Watts has published over 800 articles and other works and is a highly cited. He is on the editorial board of several journals, including Atherosclerosis, Metabolism, Journal of Clinical Lipidology, American Journal of Preventative Cardiology, Current Opinion in Lipidology, and Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity. |
